More violence on Christians
A bishop in the southern Philippines reported receiving a letter threatening him with harm if he does not convert to Islam or pay “Islamic taxes.”
Bishop Martin Jumoad of Isabela also told the Asian church news agency UCA News that he got text messages from Catholics saying they, too, had received threatening letters.
(…) They said Bishop Jumoad should choose to convert to Islam or give “jizya,” Islamic tax, to their group in exchange for protecting him in the “place of Muslims.”
If he refuses to convert or pay, the letter threatened “force, weapons or war may be used” against him. It warned him not to feel safe even if he is “surrounded by soldiers” and cited bombings in various cities.
(…)“If we do not receive response from you, it means you will oppose,” the letter added.
A document written in the local dialect on the letterhead of “Al-Harakatul Islamiyya” accompanied the letter. The bishop said he did not recognize the names, but has encountered the phrase “Al-Harakatul” in kidnapping incidents in Basilan involving Abu Sayyaf, a guerrilla group named as a terrorist organization by various countries.
(Also in Iran) Days after his release from a month of interrogations and severe torture under secret police custody, Iranian Christian Mohsen Namvar has fled across the border into Turkey with his family. Traveling by train, the badly beaten Christian arrived July 2 in eastern Turkey with his wife and son. Namvar, 44, had been held incommunicado by a branch of Sepah (the Iranian Revolutionary Guards) from May 31 until June 26, when authorities told his family they were releasing him “temporarily.” Although the secret police demanded $43,000 in bail, officers refused to issue a court receipt for the family’s cash payment. At the time of his release, Namvar was experiencing fever, severe back pain, extremely high blood pressure, uncontrollable shaking of his limbs and recurring short-term memory loss. “I have no doubt they wanted to kill me,” Namvar told Compass. According to Namvar, who converted from Islam to Christianity as a teenager, his severe physical mistreatment stemmed from his refusal to give the police any names or information about other converts and house church groups in Iran.

City official: fatal Kunming bus blasts “not terrorism”
Do you know the authorities claimed it was actually terrorism? Well, err, not anymore:
bus hit by an explosion is seen in Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, July 21, 2008. Two people were killed and 14 others injured in two separate explosions on public buses in downtown Kunming on Monday morning. (Xinhua Photo)
Police still had no clues to the backgrounds of suspects and were investigating the case, said Du, also the Kunming Public Security Bureau chief.
The explosions occurred on two Route 54 buses during Monday’s morning rush hour in Kunming. One blast was on West Renmin Road at 7:10 a.m., while the second was at the nearby intersection of Changyuan Road and West Renmin Road at 8:05 a.m.
“This is the worst case that has occurred in Kunming in 30 years,” Du said.
In a local rumor going around two to three hours prior to the blasts, some residents had received a text warning message saying “Citizens who receive this message are advised not to ride the buses of routes 54, 64 and 84 the next morning.”
“In fact, there was no such a text message,” Du said.

“Islamist menace is higher now than four years ago”
Alberto Saiz, Director of Spanish National Intelligence Center, has stated that during a University summer lecture in Aranjuez titled “Research journalism and intelligence services after March 11th bombings”. He added afterwards that Spain is better prepared now to face them now.
“Every Islamic terrorist group that operates in Europe have some kind of activity in Spain” and of course, “Spain is a target of Islamic terrorist”. He has continued saying that “even if March 11th bombings were perpetrated by independent cells from the international jihad, we have deactivated tentatives of terrorist attacks which were ordered by Al-Qaeda”
He has also underlined that “in this new world order, in which the terrorist menace is a reality, the normal citizen has a main role in the process to integrate the Muslim immigrants and, as a result, to avoid radicalism in society”.
The reality was that Zapatero made Spanish Army flee from Iraq. And the reason for that move was… that he said that a) the cause of terrorism in Spain was Iraqi war “which was illegal, unjust and illegitimate” and b) in general that there is an “ocean of world unjustice”.
And Spain keeps on being menaced by Al-Qaeda … soooo what is the cause now?

Bolivian Constitutional Tribunal stops referendum for revoking mandates to regional governors
Bolivian Constitutional Tribunal ordered on Tuesday to the Electoral National Court the suspension of the referendum for revoking the mandates scheduled for August 10th.
Silvia Salame, the only magistrate of the High Tribunal because of the resignation of the other four members elected by Parliament, made this announcement public while adding that the resolution is consequence of the request presented by the opposition’s MP, Arturo Murillo, who belongs to the center party National Unity (UN).
Salame explained that, being the only magistrate in the Constitucional Tribunal, after the other four magistrates resigned after denouncing political pressures, she can sign a resolution such as this because there is jurisprudence which can be applied to the process.
The referendum “must be suspended, because the jurisprudence of the Tribunal is compulsaory for the National Electoral Court, the Republic’s Presidente (that is, Evo Morales) and any other national institution”, the resolution says.

Jihad Watch: Chad: after listening to “an inflammatory sermon” against Christians and atheists, jihadis become “intoxicated by indescribable extremism…almost mad,” and go on wild rampage
The crisis began on June 3 when Bichara issued a manifesto declaring jihad against “Christians and atheists.”
What, no Jews?
“After Bichara’s followers went on a rampage in Kouno, destroying four churches, 158 homes, a medical clinic and a police station, government forces decided to respond in force,” McGregor writes:
The government assault apparently began as Bichara’s followers were listening to what was described as an inflammatory sermon. … Chad’s security minister described Bichara’s followers as “intoxicated by indescribable extremism … almost mad” as they “threw themselves” against the fire of security forces in the belief they were immune to bullets.

Russian Bombers Could Be Deployed to Cuba In Response To Missile Shield
Russian bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons could be deployed to Cuba in response to U.S. plans to install a missile defense system in Eastern Europe, a Russian newspaper reported Monday, citing an unnamed senior Russian air force official.
The report in Izvestia, which could not be confirmed, prompted memories of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, when the United States and the Soviet Union came to the brink of nuclear war after Nikita Khrushchev put nuclear missiles on the Caribbean island. The weapons were eventually withdrawn in an apparent Soviet climb-down, but President John F. Kennedy also secretly agreed to remove U.S. missiles from Turkey.
A spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry declined to comment on the report Monday, but did not deny it. Izvestia is often a forum for strategic leaks by Kremlin and other officials.
“While they are deploying the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, our strategic bombers will already be landing in Cuba,” Izvestia quoted the source as saying.
Hugo Chávez has also offered Putin the possibility of building military bases inside Venezuela.
