Report on Arrakis: Defamation of Religion Document Rejected by UN

with 2 comments

It’s a small victory for the defenders of free expression. The concept of defamation of religion promoted by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and some African countries did not find favor in the Human Rights Council. It was this theme that concerned all member states this Spring and remains an issue that threatens the follow-up conference on racism (Durban II) which will be held in Geneva next April. If the Council cedes this point, warn certain Western nations ‘it is the end of the Council’s credibility’. On Thursday, Githu Muigai, the Special Rapporteur for contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance, found it was not necessary to promote the sociological concept of defamation of religion but rather to adhere to juridical norms when it comes to inciting racial or religious hatred.

Well, this is something… let’s see how much time they can defend this against the Islamists…

Exposing the Horror of Russia’s Crackdown on the Blogosphere

with 2 comments

Blogger Dmitri Minaev has horrifying details on the arrest of Oborona activist and blogger Dmitri Solovyov for publishing critical posts about the Kremlin.  He points out that back in July Solovyov published a post predicting that Russia would attack Georgia in late August based on a report on Kavkaz Centre.  Among other things, KC predicted that Russia would rig a “terrorist event” in Sochi to prestage the attack, and would gradually ratchet up Ossetian military action until Georgia was forced to respond.  Minaev notes that in fact there was a bomb explosion in Sochi just before the attack.

Iran protests Belusconi’s words about Ahmadinejad

without comments

Iran has oficially protested the comments of the Council’s President, Silvio Berlusconi, who has compared Berlusconi to Adolf Hitler in the course of a meeting in Paris with the Jewish organization Keren Hayesod, defining him as “inappropriate of the Italian people and of its rich culture”. The protest of Teheran’s Government has been presented to the number 2 of the Italian embassy in Iran, Alessandro Monti, who has been summoned by the Iranian Foreign Minister.
«Berlusconi was referring himself to the statements from Iranian counterpart who has doubted about proved historical events, such as the Holocaust and the existence of the State of Israel”, has precised this afternoon the Farnesina. “Italy hopes that Iran, as the heir of a millenary culture, adopts a constructive political-diplomatic approach and assumes a more responsible role in the international stage with the respect towards human dignity and the right to exist of all nations and cultures”.

Hindu leader arrested in church attacks

with 2 comments

Police in southern India have arrested a senior leader of a right-wing Hindu group in connection with attacks on Christian churches and prayer halls last weekend, an official said Saturday.

Mahendra Kumar, a state convener of the radical Bajrang Dal group in Karnataka state, was arrested late Friday night, according to A.M. Prasad, a senior local police official.

“He’s part of the investigation of the attacks on Christian places of worship,” Prasad said.

Right-wing Hindu mobs mainly linked with Bajrang Dal attacked at least 20 churches and prayer halls in the Mangalore, Chikmaglur and Udupi districts of Karnataka state on Sept. 14, alleging that some churches had circulated literature defaming the Hindu religion, Prasad said.

French Minister of Defense denies reports that denounced French troops’ lack of equipment

with one comment

French Defense Minister, Hervé Morin, denies the information published by The Globe and Mail, in which a NATO secret report was published denouncing the lack of bullets, communications or other equipment that the French troops ambushed and killed by Taliban militants were suffering of.

The reason to deny the report is that it was written by one of the troopers who took part on the action, sooo it was made on “a hot moment” and it was only based on the data this officer had in that moment. It was not “the result of an investigation or of a conter-analysis” to consider the events. The minister, Hervé Morin, is “shocked by the early publication” of the report. Of course, he also denies they lacked of bullets during this operation.

The General Jean Louis Georgelin, French Army Chief of State, has precised that the report “was made on a hot moment by the American Forces who took part in the action“.

Hervé Morin : “Il y a un compte-rendu d’un officier de l’OTAN, pas un rapport” – Asie-Pacifique – Le Monde.fr.

Looks like that now the people who should be giving their opinion about far-away operations in details such as “lack of bullets…” are the people who didn’t take part in those operations.

Or was it that French can’t stand being saved by Americans and that the latter denounced they lack of bullets to defend themselves?
