Venezuela Accuses McDonald’s of Cooking the Books, Closes All Restaurants for 48 Hours
The Venezuelan government has ordered all McDonald’s restaurants in the country closed for 48 hours for what it calls irregularities in the fast-food chain’s financial books.
The country’s state news service says the tax agency issued the order. It affects some 115 McDonald’s restaurants nationwide.
Agency head Jose David Cabello says authorities found inconsistencies in McDonald’s books related to amounts owed in taxes, and ordered the restaurants closed Thursday through Saturday.
Well, looks like Chávez also shut down Pepsi. But it looks as if he is beginning to have problems… with someone younger and photogenic:
Young and photogenic, Leopoldo López has been running the campaign of his political life, rummaging for votes here amid a warren of crowded slums and as far away as Venezuela’s lawless western frontier. Polls show that the politician has won a strong following by promising a sharp change from the populist government of President Hugo Chávez, who after nearly a decade in office pulls virtually all the levers of power in the hemisphere’s biggest oil power.
Let’s hope this man wins…
