Italy Interior Ministry says Gypsies to be fingerprinted only if without ID
Italy’s Interior Ministry on Tuesday issued guidelines for a census of the country’s Roma population, saying that Gypsies will only be fingerprinted if they don’t have a valid identification.
The guidelines were sent to local authorities in Rome, Milan and Naples, where tens of thousands of Gypsies live in hundreds of shabby encampments built on the city outskirts, the ministry said.
Officials in the cities had already begun taking information from the inhabitants with varying methods after the government ordered the census as part of a crack down on street crime, which Italians blame mostly on foreigners.
Government officials had said the census would include fingerprinting those living the camps, adults and children alike.
But the ministry’s guidelines say fingerprints will be taken from adults and children above 14 only if they don’t have a valid ID
I am the first one in considering the immigration policy of most European countries as foolish and inadequate. But this is not a good measure: why ONLY Gypsies without valid ID are going to be fingerprinted? Are Moroccans, Algerians, Russians, Chinese… going to be fingerprinted if they don’t have a valid ID?
The court of cassation decided this did not show Tosi was a racist, but that he had “a deep aversion [to Roma] that was not determined by the Gypsy nature of the people discriminated against, but by the fact that all the Gypsies were thieves”. His dislike of them was “not therefore based on a notion of superiority or racial hatred, but on racial prejudice”.
Is that more acceptable morally speaking? I mean, is racial hatred worse than racial prejudice? Saying that ALL Gypsies are thieves is a fact?
Meanwhile, Berlusconi has won immunity from prosecution. Isn’t this a magnificent proof of equality?

Italian commentator Sergio Romano, writing in the Corriere della Sera, said that “a photo can lie or give a wrong impression. Did the vacationers know that the victims were Roma? The same indifference could been shown towards Italians.” The photos also do not show how several beachgoers jumped into the sea to try to save the girls who apparently did not know how to swim.
Yeah, I think that is the word for today’s Europeans: indifference for other people’s sufferings. Only if those sufferings can affect them, they began to worry about them. And sometimes they don’t worry even in that case.
