Russia Denies Forces Fire Near Georgian, Polish Leaders
Russia’s peacekeeping mission in Georgia’s rebel region of South Ossetia denied Sunday that its forces fired on a convoy carrying the presidents of Georgia and Poland, the Interfax news agency reported.”The claims that Russian forces were involved in shooting against the convoy do not correspond to reality,” an official in the mission’s headquarters in the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali was quoted as saying.
A Georgian presidential spokeswoman said earlier in Tbilisi that Russian forces at a checkpoint near South Ossetia had fired on the convoy in which Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Polish counterpart Lech Kaczynski were traveling.
