Malaysia: ‘Religious department to act against any blogger who insults Islam’

with 2 comments

PUTRAJAYA: The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will take stern action against bloggers who insult Islam, including non-Muslims.

Its director-general Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz said the department could act against irresponsible bloggers, regardless of their religious background.

“Right now, the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission are still trying to trace the blogger said to have insulted Prophet Muhammad.

“We will come in once the culprit is found,” he said.

Wan Mohamad also said there were bound to be “extremists” among religious followers or leaders in view of the country’s multi-ethnicity.

How sweet!!

‘Honour killing’ sentence against Pakistani upheld

with one comment

An Italian court of appeal upheld on Friday a 30-year prison sentence for a Pakistani father who murdered his daughter in a so-called honour killing in 2006.

The young woman’s two brothers-in-law, who were also jailed for 30 years for their part in her death, saw their sentence reduced to 17 years, Sky TG24 news channel reported. The stabbed body of Hina Saleem, 21, was found buried in the garden of the family home in Sarezzo, near the northern city of Brescia, on August 11, 2006.

Ms Saleem, who reportedly refused an arranged marriage with a cousin, had been estranged from her family and lived with her Italian boyfriend Giuseppe Tempini.

Meanwhile this is at least surprising:

Eight United Nations agencies have co-sponsored the first Palestinian ‘festival’ to combat violence against women, driving home the message that so-called “honour killings” have nothing to do with honour and seeking to break the conspiracy of silence surrounding domestic abuse.

“It is time for action, not words,” UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Program Manager in the Occupied Palestinian Territory Alia’ Al-Yassir said in the inaugural speech of the festival held, Thursday, in Ramallah. “UN agencies are working as one on this issue and supporting civil societies in their efforts to end violence against women

Well, I don’t think that a “festival” is going to change anything, least if organised by UN. But it’s something refreshing to see some people in those places really worried about this.

Then there is also this other statement:

“Islam does not permit illicit relationship, but killing a girl for this reason is a cold-blooded murder and is a serious offence under the Islamic law,” chairman of Shariyat Court Maulana Irfan Mufti Zulfikar said.

There are so many people going against Islam, then… Of course, this man is from India and was ruling in a case where a girl was killed out of honor.

20.000 Muslims attack Coptic Church in Egypt

with 7 comments

One thousand Christians were today trapped inside the Coptic Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary in West Ain Shams,Cairo, after more than twenty thousand Muslims attacked them with stones and butane gas cylinders. The Church’s priest Father Antonious said that the situation is extremely dangerous.

The Muslim mob that attacked the church blocked both sides of the street and encircled the church building, broke its doors and demolished its entire first floor. The mob were chanting Jihad verses as well as slogans saying “we will demolish the church” and “We sacrifice our blood and souls, we sacrifice ourselves for you, Islam”, while the entrapped Christians chanted “Lord have mercy”.

The incident started on the occasion of the inauguration of the Church today, when the Muslims hastily established a Mosque in the early hours of this morning, by taking over the first floor of a newly-built building facing the Church and started praying there.

Shariah alert: Malaysian shariah judge tells everyone that Islam defends everybody

with one comment

Islam does not discriminate against any race or religion so non-Muslims do not have to fear if common law and syariah courts were to be merged as suggested by a former Chief Justice.
Syariah Court Judge and Syariah Judicial Department director-general Datuk Ibrahim Lembut said such fears among non-Muslims were unwarranted.
“Islam will defend everybody. The impression that merging the two court systems will override the rights of the non-Muslims is wrong,” he told reporters after attending the International Seminar on Comparative Law at Marriott Hotel here on Tuesday.“
However, we still have a long way to go before we can merge the two court systems although we have held talks on the possibility of harmonising civil and syariah laws,” he said.

Syariah judge: Islam defends everybody

He was answering this:

MCA legal bureau chairman Datuk Leong Tang Chong said such a merger would subject non-Muslims to syariah jurisdiction on all legal matters, including interfaith cases related to marriage and divorce.

“To compel a non-Muslim to syariah jurisdiction is a violation of the Federal Constitution as Article 11 assures and guarantees all persons complete freedom of religion,” he said, adding that the MCA strongly objected to the proposal.

He also said the independence of civil court judges should remain within the powers of the civil courts and not be subjected to the interpretation of syariah law.

Malaysia backs down from yoga ban amid backlash: Scientific American

with one comment

Malaysia’s prime minister said Wednesday Muslims should still take up yoga, reversing an outright ban that has drawn widespread protests amid concerns over growing Islamic fundamentalism in the multiracial nation.
Malaysia’s National Fatwa Council, comprising Islamic scholars, told Muslims at the weekend to avoid yoga because it uses Hindu prayers that could erode Muslims’ faith.
But the decision drew a sharp rebuke from many Muslims and even Malaysia’s sultans, or hereditary rulers, who said that they should be consulted on any matters involving Islam.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi moved to contain the damage, telling the national news agency Bernama that Muslims could carry on doing yoga but minus the chanting.
“I wish to state that a physical regime with no elements of worship can continue, meaning, it is not banned. I believe that Muslims are not easily swayed into polytheism,” he said.

A two-week operation to secure the frontier city of Peshawar, which sits on a key supply route for U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, killed 25 suspected militants, a Pakistani official said Monday.Security forces backed by warplanes and artillery swept through an area between the city and Pakistan’s wild tribal belt, where Taliban and al-Qaida militants have found refuge.
Zafrullah Khan, commander of paramilitary Frontier Constabulary troops in the area, said his force and police have taken control of 22 of 25 targeted villages and would clear the others within a week.

Pakistan says militants pushed back from Peshawar – Yahoo! News

These are good news, because not very long ago, the Talibans were inside Peshawar, killing innocent Shia Muslims, because they didn’t agree with them. Respect and freedom first, heh?
